“We Are Titusville”, says Dan Diesel at First Council Meeting as Mayor

Dan Diesel was officially sworn-in as the 28th Mayor during a ceremony with friends and family early Tuesday morning.

Diesel became a City Council member in 2016, winning a four-way race to succeed Walt Johnson on the council in Seat 3, getting 53.94% of the vote. The second-place candidate received 17.07%. Diesel filled the remaining two years of Johnson’s four-year term, after Johnson decided to run for mayor. Diesel won a four-year term in 2018, when he was unopposed.

He decided to run for mayor this year, but said he would have withdrawn from the race if Johnson decided to run, Johnson didn’t run, and neither did anyone else but Diesel.

Diesel said becoming mayor is “a dream come true,” just like when he became football coach at Titusville High, a position he held for 13 years.

“It’s just full circle,” Diesel told Florida Today. “It’s very rare to be unopposed in the mayor’s race.”

Diesel also has coached a number of other sports at Titusville over the years — from wresting to golf.

He was an assistant principal and science teacher there as well, and has worked at the school for 35 years.

Diesel said among his priorities as mayor will be pushing for “smart growth,” by balancing economic development with nature preservation. He also will focus on the city budget, including the impact of COVID-19 on revenue and expenses. And he will make it a priority to get out into the community, visiting Titusville’s neighborhoods.

We Are Titusville

At the end of his first City Council meeting as Mayor, Diesel said some touching words in which I think all Titusville Residents can share in and be proud of: “We Are Titusville”
